Freed-Hardeman Community Selects Anna Claire Butt, of Columbia, for FHU Top Honor

HENDERSON, Tenn. (04/23/2026) — Freed-Hardeman University has named its 2026 Mr. and Miss FHU, selecting seniors Tiro "Philly" Nong, of Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, and Anna Claire Butt, of Columbia, Tennessee, following a campus-wide vote. The honor was announced during a special chapel presentation April 23, where eight senior nominees were recognized.

"The leadership, character and campus involvement displayed by both Philly and Anna Claire illustrate the best of the Freed-Hardeman student experience," said Chris Ramey, director of alumni engagement. "They have each invested in this community in meaningful ways, and we're proud to recognize the influence they've had on the lives of those around them."

Mr. FHU, Tiro "Philly" Nong, is the son of George and Anna Nong and is majoring in professional biology. As a student, he has been a member of the university soccer team as well as the science research team. Nong plans to pursue graduate studies in clinical research before eventually returning to South Africa to share the Gospel.

Reflecting on his FHU experience, Nong said, "My school challenges me to be a better disciple. I look around and am in awe of how many opportunities we have to grow spiritually. Freed-Hardeman is not the buildings, titles, investments or the accolades - it's the people. I also appreciate being part of the research team that has exposed me to a skillset that will be crucial for my future. I am especially grateful for all my instructors who have been patient with me and have set a solid foundation for me to go into the world with no fear."

Miss FHU, Anna Claire Butt, is the daughter of Kyle and Bethany Butt and is majoring in communication sciences and disorders. She has served as a mission trip coordinator for the Phi Kappa Alpha social club and is a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association. Butt has also served students as an undergraduate representative for the Tennessee Association of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists, participated on the freshman homecoming court and competed in Weekend Warriors ultimate frisbee. She plans to attend graduate school for speech language pathology.

"The thing that I appreciate most about Freed-Hardeman is being at a place where I can make godly friendships that will last a lifetime," Butt shared.
